Checklist: Toddler Products for the second year…


Gear

Car Seat: once your child reaches 20 pounds, it’s time for a new seat.

Third Year Car Seat: once your child reaches 30 to 50 pounds it’s time for a booster seat.

Lightweight stroller that’s easy to carry.

Furniture

Crib: You’ll need a crib that has a mattress that lowers enough that your child can’t crawl out.  See our tips on choosing a crib. Crib mattress: See our tips on choosing a crib mattress.

Dresser, Child sized table & chairs.

Bed (Third Year): Your child will probably outgrow his or her crib by their second birthday at which time you will switch to a regular bed, with guardrails.

Clothing

Toddler type one piece outfits,

Shirts

Pants

Pajamas

Shoes & socks

Jackets & sweaters
Hats or bonnets

Mittens or gloves

Swimwear. You will want clothes that are more durable now that you child is more active.

Third year: You can start to get away from the one piece outfits, but you may still want to buy clothes, jackets and shoes that are easy to put on and take off.  You will also want clothes that are durable.

Diapering / Toilet Training

Potty/toilet training seat.

Stool: (For toilet attached training seats and so your child can wash their hands at the sink. While some children begin toilet training at around 1 1/2 years of age, you’ll want to have a training seat ready to go before your child is ready.  Some training seats attach directly to a regular toilet, in which case you will need the stool, while other training seats are freestanding and child size.

Feeding

Booster seat (While some children like to eat in their highchairs for several years, others want to sit like mom and dad do at the table.).

Plastic plates (Some plates have separate compartments so different food doesn’t touch one another and some plates also have suction cups which keeps the plate on the table.)

Non-spill drinking cups.

Toddler size spoons & forks, which have wider handles for easier grasping.  (You’ll still probably want to hold off on having them use knives.)

Third Year:

Booster seat (These seats strap to regular sized chairs, which allow your little one to reach the table.)
