We created a product that will protect them just in case,” says Rayko. They can be worn at amusement parks, water parks, stadiums, on field trips, at the playground, zoos, museums, malls, carnivals and fairs- virtually anywhere a small child could get lost in a crowd.

Babies don’t need expensive toys—just you and this book!

Beltsville, MD – Engaging your baby in stimulating experiences encourages brain development and paves the way for successful learning in the future.

Did you know?

  • A baby’s brain is 250% more active than that of an adult.
  • The networking of the brains’ synapses is nearly complete after the first three years.
  • You are your baby’s best toy!

Drawing on extensive brain research, child development expert and best-selling author Jackie Silberg presents Baby Smarts. Filled with developmental games, Baby Smarts helps you build your baby’s brain power, one activity at a time!

Recently awarded two prestigious parenting awards, the iParenting Award and the National Parenting Publications Gold Award, Baby Smarts helps you unlock the power of your baby’s brain with simple activities that do not require expensive toys or props.

Try these fun activities with your baby:

Floating Feathers (3-6 month olds)

  • Lie down on your back with your baby next to you.
  • Throw a brightly colored feather in the air and watch it float gently to the ground.
  • This is a very relaxing game, and it challenges babies to follow (track) objects with their eyes. (Note: You can find feathers at art supply stores.)

Under the Blanket (9-12 month olds)

  • This game develops your baby’s observation skills, demonstrates the concept of “under,” and enhances your baby’s ability to follow directions.
  • Let your baby watch as you hide a small toy under a pillow.
  • After you hide the toy, ask her to find it.
  • If she does not understand, ask her again and show her that the toy is under the pillow.
  • Tell her that you are now going to hide the toy under the blanket.
  • Keep hiding the toy in different places that are “under” something.

_Moms-to-be trust BabyPlus for prenatal learning

Many parents-to-be talk to their developing child in the womb or play music because they know that, at 18 weeks, the developing baby can begin to recognize sounds. A new study sheds light on what type of auditory stimulation can actually be recognized by the developing baby in the womb, revealing that a simple beat is not only recognized in the womb, but is also developmentally stimulating for the baby in-utero (http://tinyurl.com/b9kykr). It suggests that, while certainly great for bonding, music is too complex for the developing baby and the spoken word is too muffled by the time it travels through the amniotic fluid.

More than 150,000 moms worldwide have already embraced the idea of prenatal learning using simple beats with the BabyPlus Prenatal Education System (www.babyPlus.com) – the first U.S. patented prenatal education system that uses simple beats similar to the maternal heartbeat to stimulate prenatal learning. The BabyPlus System introduces patterns of sound in the primary language a developing baby can understand and hears 24/7—the maternal heartbeat. As the baby differentiates the simple rhythmic sounds of BabyPlus from those of the mother’s heartbeat, learning begins at the earliest stage of development. The mother’s heartbeat (a simple beat) is the only sound a growing baby can comprehend, making BabyPlus the most developmentally appropriate form of learning in the womb.

So, can learning begin in the womb? The study suggests so, and the BabyPlus parent testimonials about their baby’s characteristics after birth and into childhood further strengthen the study’s findings. Any interest in receiving more information about BabyPlus, images or in speaking with the founder about the concept of prenatal learning?

The Real Housewives and Moms of Hawaii

The Real Housewives and Moms of Hawaii

One Fabulous Mom

What we all long to hear from our friends and peers. A Mom’s survival guide to help you navigate everything from pacifiers to purses. Looking great, feeling great and still being a Mom!

TV Personality Mom

Trini Kaopuiki Clark can be seen every morning on KHON2 News. Trini joined KHON in 2000, after serving as a spokesperson for Hawaii, working with a variety of charities and traveling the globe as Miss Hawaii USA. In addition to reporting, Trini covers weather and is actively involved in the Lokahi Giving Project, a year round “helping organization.”  Trini enjoys spending time with her husband, Sean, and their two children: 4-year old Malie and 22-month old Kala.

HBT: The idea of doing a profile on the Real Housewives and Moms of Hawaii come from the well known show on Bravo The Real Housewives of OC, NY, & NJ.  There’s been some inquiry about doing a one here in Hawaii.  What are your thoughts about this show? And if you were selected to be one of the Real Housewives of Hawaii, what would you like the show to focus on?

TRINI: While I don’t normally like reality TV shows, I have to admit I LOVE watching ‘The Real Housewives of NY and NJ’.  It’s my guilty pleasure.  That said, I don’t think I would ever be selected (or want to be selected) to be on the show.  Compared to the other wives and moms on the show, my life is boring.  It doesn’t have the “drama” that most viewers secretly enjoy.  I’m happy to say that my life, for the most part, is free of “drama”, which seems to be a necessary element of reality TV.

HBT: Define “Ideal Mom” to you?

TRINI: The”Ideal Housewife and Mom”  to me is someone who is devoted, loving, patient and fun. Extra points are given for keeping a clean and organized household.

HBT: Share one or two great moments as a (new) Mom while maintaining a career and keeping a husband happy.

TRINI: My husband and I don’t see each other as much as we’d like.  We have different work schedules and really need to work hard to make time for each other! One of the ways  we figure in time for each other is I’ll bring the kids down to his work and meet him for lunch.  We walk over to Ala Moana Park and have a picnic while the kids play and feed the fish. It’s a special time for us.

My four year-old daughter, intentionally or unintentionally, cracks me up daily!  She’s always singing or dancing around the house and imitating ”mommy” to her younger brother.  One day, I asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up …she said “a mommy.”  So, I asked her, “what do mommys do?”  And she answered, “they drive you to school, hula, playdates and do errands!.”

HBT:  Lastly, what is your mom’s survival guide to help you navigate everything from pacifiers to purses, while looking great, feeling great and still a mom?

TRINI:  Make time for yourself. Just 15-20 minutes a day of alone time is enough to rejuvenate your mind and spirit!  Also, stay in touch with your girlfriends … they can help keep you sane!

PHILANTHROPIST MOM

HBT: The idea of doing a profile on the Real Housewives and Moms of Hawaii come from the well known show on Bravo The Real Housewives of OC, NY, & NJ.  There’s been some inquiry about doing a one here in Hawaii.  What are your thoughts about this show? And if you were selected to be one of the Real Housewives of Hawaii, what would you like the show to focus on?

Liz: To be quite honest, I’ve never watched any of the “real housewives shows”. If they decided to do a show in Hawaii I would hope for them to focus on children’s issues. Where they take the kids for entertainment, what type of kiddie parties they throw and/or attend, family vacations, what types of meals they prepare for their family. I’d like to see them do homework time & reading time with their children, how they deal with tantrums, etc. I’d love to watch positive roll models!

HBT: Define “Ideal Mom” to you?

Liz: From my perspective the ideal housewife and mom is a woman who is able to provide a loving, nurturing environment that stimulates personal growth. This would be three-dimensional, 1) between husband and wife, 2) mother and child and 3) within the family. This promotes a purpose driven life that will motivate us as individuals and as well as a family unit.

HBT: Share one or two great moments as a (new) Mom while maintaining a career and keeping a husband happy.

Liz: I’ve been so blessed to be able to take an extended break from working to concentrate on being a mom and wife. I love that I can spend the morning with my grandmother, pop in and have lunch with my pre-schooler, take the baby for a long walk, nap with the baby at 1 in the afternoon and still cook dinner before my husband gets home. These moments make the entire day great!

HBT:  Lastly, what is your mom’s survival guide to help you navigate everything from pacifiers to purses, while looking great, feeling great and still a mom?

Liz: Hahahah, looking great, feeling great and navigating pacifiers to purses?! The secret is a great pastor and a lot of FAITH!  If you can accept that for the first few months of motherhood its ok to let laundry pile up, still be in your pjs at 4pm (the NEXT day), not remember what day of the week it is, forget you left the stove on and put the remote control in the frige, and accept baby spit up as your new scent for the season…..then you’ll “navigate” just fine.

ENTERPRENEUR MOM

Tammy Perkins, Maui Mom

HBT: The idea of doing a profile on the Real Housewives and Moms of Hawaii come from the well known show on Bravo The Real Housewives of OC, NY, & NJ.  There’s been some inquiry about doing a one here in Hawaii.  What are your thoughts about this show? And, if you were selected to be one of the Real Housewives of Hawaii, what would you like the show to focus on?

TAMMY: I think the concept of the show is brilliant. I think that the HI show should focus on the Hawaii lifestyle, super human mommy power, love & relationships, and the career game. It should include adventure sports (surfing, paddle boarding, cliff jumping, kayaking etc.). Should highlight career challenges, offer raw personality and superior intellect. It should be sexy at times, dirty at times, never boring, always buzzing, and it should always inspire an insatiable appetite within the viewer to be plugged in.

HBT: Define “Ideal Housewife & Mom” to you?

TAMMY: I feel that a woman who always strives to her best, takes the time to give her undivided attention to her family, continually works towards her own spiritual growth, finds a way to balance her career & personal time, and always operates out of the greater good is very ideal. This is something I practice continually each and every day.

HBT: Share one or two great moments as a (new) Mom while maintaining a career and keeping the husband happy.

TAMMY: I can honestly say that there are more than two great moments as a new mom each and every day of my life, even while juggling my career. Like, when my youngest comes out of her bedroom singing at the top of her lungs the ABC’s while playing on her ukulele and dancing the hula (all while I’m on a business call), or when she wears my skirt around her body and up onto her shoulders as a poncho when I’m meeting with a client. It’s all truly amazing and so I guess you could say that it’s the little things that mean the most to me and having the ability to experience the journey as a new mom while juggling career is one of the greatest gifts I could ever ask for. As far as the husband goes, he’s on his own!

HBT:  Lastly, what is your mom’s survival guide to help you navigate everything from pacifiers to purses, while looking great, feeling great and still a mom?

TAMMY: Tough question! First of all, I would have to say that it’s important to always remain calm! I always carry an extra pacifier, diapers/pull-ups, wipes, a change of clothes and snack items & bottled water (an absolute must), and a toy or two in a little backpack that is located inside my vehicle. I also pack an extra little dress for me with a small makeup refresher bag and any other incidental feel good items. I use this backpack as a back up to the everyday bag that I carry for her and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve dipped into it. It’s been a LIFE SAVER! At the end of the week I clean & rotate the backpack items when I have more “home” time. Since I gave birth to my youngest daughter I have accumulated every type and size of bag for every occasion. My favorite main bag is a black juicy couture bag with a custom painted and jeweled design on the outside. It has 3 main pockets and other interior concealed pockets that can hold just about anything. It’s so durable that I can take it to the beach, take it to the pool, take it to the restaurant or anywhere. That bag definitely puts style in my mommy steps!

Dad and the New Baby!

Dad and the New Baby!

By Katherine Arrayan

Becoming a dad can be scary business.  The thought of being responsible for such a tiny, fragile human being can wrack the nerves of even the most macho of men.  But you can take a deep breath because life after baby is usually not as terrifying as it seems.  With a bit of common sense and a healthy dose of time tested wisdom, you will be sailing through infancy in no time!

One quality that all amazing dad have in common is that they get involved and stay involved.  It is common for dad to feel like the third wheel but that is no reason to shirk your responsibilities.  Dads who get up close and personal with the daily activities of childcare raise happier, healthier and more independent kids overall.  There is no better time than the present to make your presence known.

It is never too early to start getting involved.  You can share in the excitement of your soon-to-be baby by learning about pregnancy.  Even the most basic knowledge of childbirth will benefit you in the delivery room.  Even though your schedule may be jam packed, try to make as many of the prenatal checkups as humanly possible.  Pick up some of the pregnancy books that are laying around the house and read a chapter or two.  Many of these books are broken up into short, nonthreatening, and often entertaining segments.  The more you know about giving birth, the more fun the whole process with be for both you and your partner.

Because a mother spends so much time focused on caring for her new baby, fathers offer a helping hand by caring for the mother – or at least making sure she is caring for herself!  Between late night nursing and afternoon diaper changes, most new moms can hardly find time to brush their teeth.  After all the attention and pampering of pregnancy, this can be a rough transition and most moms are left feeling just short of haggard during the first few weeks.  Dads who offer to take baby so their partner can shower should be given the medal of valor.  Dads who step it up and offer a massage or a pedicure are nothing less than saints!

Everyone need sleep but no one needs it as desperately as a new mother.  After running the marathon of childbirth a woman’s mind and body is exhausted.  Compound this with the demands of a newborn baby and raging hormones and you have a sure-fire recipe for a breakdown!  Because newborns feed every 2-3 hours, uninterrupted sleep is worth its weight in gold.  As an involved dad, you can take over at least one of the daily feedings so mom will get 5+ hours of sound sleep.  Dads of breastfed babies should not rule out this contribution.  You and your partner can decide to pump a bottle or introduce one formula feed but, however you orchestrate it, it’s important to ensure that your partner gets the sleep she needs to recover from labor and delivery.

Do not just give help, offer it.  By the time a woman has to ask for help she is most likely already angry about not receiving it.  Offering to change a diaper or feed a bottle will earn you countless brownie points for the months ahead.  Offer to help with anything and everything.  Most men are surprised by how often new moms decline help and want to do it themselves.  But the more you offer the more she knows you care and want to help, and it is the thought that counts!

Being involved and spending time with your new baby will lay the foundation for a lifetime of love. Trying to “discipline” an infant will only lead you to enormous frustration and it is categorically impossible to spoil a baby.   So feel free to cuddle, kiss, and coo your new little guy or gal as much as your heart desires.  Kids grow fast and any experienced parent will tell you that childhood flies by in the blink of an eye.  Enjoy these few precious years by making family time top priority.  And, most importantly, do not forget to give yourself a pat on the back for being such an amazing and involved dad!

Ask the Experts

ASK THE EXPERTS

Q & A

Welcome! Here we will answer the questions that our readers submit to us and we ask our doctor, nurse, and behavioral experts on the islands for the ‘simple human answers’. If you would like to ask us a question, visit our website and get into our Q&A information tab.

PRE-PREGNANCY

#1 Q. How important are taking vitamins/supplements before becoming pregnant?

A. Taking vitamins isn’t a solution to becoming pregnant. It does however very much help you become pregnant better if you a well nourished and are healthy.

#2. Q. What’s a healthy weight to get pregnant?

A. It depends on your height and current weight. A healthy weight would be anywhere in the middle of the weight range chart. It is very important to be healthy and to stay away from hazardous materials such as cigarette smoke.

#3 Q. Is it more difficult to become pregnant if I am overweight or underweight?

A. Sometimes it is. If you are anorexic, your body is too mal nourished to produce the healthy amount of body fat needed to provide for the baby. Athletes for example have a difficult time due to lack of body fat. If you are extremely obese, the soft tissue might become too large and might become a problem for hosting the child.

PREGNANCY

#1 Q. Is there any stage during the pregnancy when it is unsafe to swim or go into the ocean?

A. There is no real threat to the woman unless she is bleeding or her water is broken, most women actually think it feels good ( because of the buoyancy).

# 2 Q.What exercises can I continue during pregnancy? (running/hiking/yoga)

A. Yoga of course is very health for the mind and body. Walking and swimming are good to get a good blood flow. These all support a healthy heart and provide glowing energy.

# 3 Q. What foods really are good for you and not good?

A. Food that is good for mom would normally be good for baby. Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are healthy. Not much to avoid, other than keeping fish intake to a very minimum (avoid shark, swordfish, king mackerel, white tuna and tilefish). Do not consume more than 12 oz of fish or 6 oz of white tuna a week.

POST PREGNANCY-Early Days

#1 Q. I heard that new moms usually feel weepy after birth, is that a bad sign?

A. Not at all. It’s called the baby blues and it’s very common. It is a life (and hormone) changing experience that leaves the mother drained and emotional. Only 12 percent of people experience depression that lasts longer.

#2 Q. Other than creams, is there anything that moms can do to help reduce the excruciating pain of milking?

A. Apply cold packs on the area after feeding. Do not wear under wired bra’s. Feed your baby as often as they want (about every 2 hours).

#3 Q. Is it true that if I lay my baby on his back too often that his head will mold flatter than normal?

  1. A. The skull bones are still soft in newborns so if your baby spends all its time on its back, the bones will not be able to remold. Alternate your baby on it’s side and also some belly time.

TODDLERS

#1 Q. My baby still night wakes even with daily naps, how can I fix this?

A. This may be due to irregularities in the child’s routine. Stick to a steady schedule. Mealtimes, naps, potty time etc. should all be consistent and at the same time or pattern.

#2 Q. My child smacks my face or tries to bite me when I take away something that she should not be playing with. I don’t want to spank her, what should I do?

A. Every parent has their own methods. The one I believe to be the best is to not hit the child back, but to restrain the arms and sternly tell them that they hurt you and it is not nice.

#3Q. What are some DO’s and DON’TS during a temper tantrum?

A. You should defiantly not leave your child. Many parents lose their temper when their children refuse to stop screaming, the problem with this is that the child experiences vulnerability and abandonment. You should try to hold your child if you can, even if they are still wailing about, so that they know that you are there for them regardless.
